Corner of Church St and Market St Wollongong 8am, 9:30am, 11am, 5pm & 7pm each Sunday
Friends, are you ready for Christmas?
That’s the theme of our Christmas postcard and advertising video this year… Which thanks to our Communications Minister, Lauren Russell, was all ready to be used even before December arrived! Keep your eyes and ears out, and be ready to share on Facebook, or via email, or better still via a personal hand delivered invitation soon! Of course, we’ll need postcards delivered to letterboxes around the city too.
But I thought I could help you get ready by briefing you on what’s on at St Mick’s!
Our Thursday arvo Kids Club wraps up with Kids’ Christmas Celebrations for Years 2-6 at school on 8th December, 4-6pm in the hall. Jumping castle, Christmas Bible story, craft activities and games. Plus a BBQ from 5:30pm for parents to join. Invite your kids’ friends from school or the neighbourhood. $5 per child. Click here to register.
Our Friendship Service in December is on Wednesday 14th December, 10:30am, and we’ll enjoy carols, Communion and a ‘light’ lunch with our frail aged. All welcome.
A new initiative we’re trying is Carols on the Lawn – Sunday before Christmas, Dec. 18th, at the special joint time of 6pm. We’ll have a modern band rocking our classic carols. Two aims. 1. To give St Michael’s people a chance to celebrate Christmas with your church family, especially those whose circumstances mean they’re away from Wollongong on 24-25 December and normally miss out. 2. To give you a chance to invite friends to a more informal outdoor style of service. So we are not targeting lots of external advertising with this, but more a BYO friends, alongside our own community contacts from English classes and Mini-Mikes who might not come into the Cathedral quite so easily. We hope to have a BarBQ and jumping castle from 5:30pm. (Can you volunteer to help with that!?)
Another innovation is Australian movie night, Tuesday 7pm, December 20th. The 5pm congregation is hosting this for fun, and especially for our English for Life students on December 20 at 7pm. We’d love you to join us to enjoy the movie ‘Babe’ with us as we show hospitality to the students and their families. Bring some finger/snack food to share and a bean bag (if you like). We’ll be making sure there’s plenty of popcorn.
Then there’s our much loved Carols and Lessons, 6pm and 8pm, with our annual Christmas choir on Christmas Eve, 24th December. (It really helps with balancing numbers if those without little kids come at the later timeslot where at all possible.)
And Christmas Day services are at 7:30am (The Lord’s Supper) & 9:30am (family service).
Lastly, a conversation idea for you out in your networks through December is to ask, “What does Christmas look like for you?” or “What are some of your Christmas traditions?” This should give you a chance to include something you love about from the gospel at Christmas. Perhaps a line from a favourite carol. Or a reminder of humility from our Saviour in manger. Maybe the pleasure of giving gifts, just as God has done for you!
Warmly in Christ,
