For five Mondays in July and August, Jon and I attended the Families Equip Parenting Course. We thought it was so good!
The course was written and presented by lay ministry couple, Kate and Ian Pearse, and is endorsed by Mother’s Union. Kate and Ian brought with them a humble, considered framework for approaching parenting at any stage, as well as a wealth of experience – honestly sharing successes and failures.
My main motivation for attending was to provide the time and space for Jon and I to discuss and work on our parenting – to make sure we were on the same page. What we got out of it was a whole lot more.
Although this course was written by Christians and each of the 5 sessions are loosely based on a Bible verse, it was not overly Christian. But concepts and strategies are discussed in light of biblical wisdom with the aim of building families up in Christ. I would have no hesitation in recommending this course to someone who does not identify as Christian.
Each session was presented in an interesting and interactive way to facilitate discussion and encourage the sharing of ideas and experience. We looked at parenting styles we experienced as children and have used as parents ourselves; childhood development and resilience; the importance of building relationships; strategies for discipline, and strengthening the family through celebration and time together.
We were constantly challenged to think through and critique why we do what we do when interacting with each of our children; be purposeful in implementing new strategies, and keep trusting our children to God’s loving care.
Parenting is a relentless role which, apparently, gets trickier and brings new challenges with each stage. This course has motivated us to persevere, to value family traditions and holidays together, to celebrate together, to listen to and encourage each other and to trust in God’s strength each step of the way.
The next time this course is run*, if you are a parent, then I urge you to make it a priority. It is so worth it and I reckon the 11 or so families who attended would agree.

P.S. The pastoral staff team certainly hope to schedule this course again in 2018.
