Jesus is … Turning Wine into Water

Community, Events, Ministers' letters

Yes, you read that headline correctly. Jesus is… turning wine into water!

On 10 March 2018 at Towradgi Park. And through the weeks leading up to that date.

Christians are familiar with the famous ‘first sign’ at the wedding in Cana Jesus attended with his mum! She pressed him into helping when the wine ran out at the (week-long?) reception. Jesus turned 6 giant jugs of water into the equivalent of 600 bottles of premium wine. And he did it very privately, so that not even the MC knew at the time. By this kind act, he saved the groom much embarrassment. And by his service, the Bible says he displayed his glory – glory which ultimately climaxed at the cross. (See John 2:1-11.)

But Christians also know that wherever the love and mercy of Jesus goes, it also leads those so forgiven and changed into acts of service for others. And that’s how it comes about that Jesus is now turning wine into water!

On Saturday, 10 March, 10am-1pm, we will be gathering with our church family, alongside other church families in our community for a WaterWorks event.

WaterWorks is Anglican Aid’s project enabling those in impoverished communities to get access to clean and reliable water supplies so badly needed.

On that Saturday, we’ll enjoy the beautiful waters of Wollongong, so freely available to us. Perhaps a walk or run on the beach, or a bike ride along the coastal track, followed by a swim to cool off… And there will be some fun activities for the kids. Then we picnic or BBQ together. And we hear from an Anglican Aid rep. about what the funds will achieve.

But it’s the days before I’m concerned about now. How will we raise funds for Anglican Aid? This time I suggest it is not asking others. It’s by going without ourselves.

Decide to drink only water for a week, or a fortnight, or a month. Or go without your favourite beverage for that period. You choose. But decide to start ASAP!

Every time you would buy a coffee, OJ, beer, wine or soft-drink (or the makings, etc.), instead you drink (tap!) water. And you transfer the cost of that other drink into your stash to donate to WaterWorks. At the end of the period, you donate all the money you saved!

This is a great community social justice event you can invite friends with a spiritual inclination, or a fringe church connection to do with you.

Only Jesus has the power to turn water into wine. But his love also empowers us to turn wine (or coffee or beer or juice) into water.

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? – 1 John 3:16-17

Warmly in Christ,

Sandy Grant
Senior Minister
