Annual Thanksgiving Day 2018

Announcements, Community, Ministers' letters, Missions, News & Prayer, Social comment

For many years at the Cathedral, we’ve run an Annual Thanksgiving Day (ATD) appeal in the lead up to St Michael’s Day. (29thSeptember on the church calendar, reminding us to take the existence of angels seriously!) We direct every single cent raised to Christian ministry and aid projects outsideSt Michael’s.

One growth group urged us to include drought relief among projects for 2018. I consulted the Bush Church Aid Society, and they recommended the Anglican Parish of Narromine with Trangie, where Rev Phil Howes and James Damond are doing some great evangelical work. (When he was youth minister at Bathurst Cathedral, Phil used to bring his youth group to St Michael’s on their annual camp at the surf leisure resort!)

Seeing how serious the drought is in NSW, the Wardens have already sent $2000 to Narromine/Trangie this week. Phil has been talking with local Christian farmers how to best use this in Jesus’ name. They are considering individual care packages for affected households, hosting a get together breakfast for morale, and perhaps sponsorship for a family who can’t otherwise go to church camp.

Here is the full list of ATD Projects that our Parish Council has resolved to support in the lead up to St Michael’s Day 2018, along with a dollar target:

  • Expenses gift of $900 each to 6 theological students from St Michael’s
    • Namely: Brian Barker, Cameron Mason, James Chen, Varun Varghese (all at Moore), Emily Wynne (SMBC), Matt Shannon (Youthworks)
  • Thank you and relocation gift to Skye Walker – $1,000
  • Building New Churches in New Communities(e.g. Leppington) – $2,000
  • Diamond Pregnancy Agencytrying to set up in Wollongong – $2,000
    • Helping women face an unplanned pregnancy with compassion and no judgment by offering practical assistance so that “No woman should ever feel that … there are no options left for her except to terminate her pregnancy.”
  • Drought Relief via Narromine + Trangie Anglican – $2,000
  • Open Doors Appeal – $2,000
    • Supporting refugees and persecuted Christians “where the need is greatest”

Whatever is in excess of these targets will be shared equally between the last 4 projects!

After quite some reflection and discussion, the pastoral staff team consider that “overflowing with thankfulness” (Colossians 2:7) is one of the ‘habits of the heart’ we should most aim at this term, as we seek to Establish people in the faith.

God has done so much for us, in giving us the gift of his only Son, Jesus Christ. And his work in dying for us on the cross and rising again has not only secured our forgiveness and eternity, but gives us adoption into God’s family, so we can call God “our Father”.

Australia’s first sermon was preached on Psalm 116:12,

“What shall I render to the Lord for all his benefits to me?”

A generous gift to others via the St Michael’s Day Thanksgiving appeal could be a small but significant part of an overflowing answer.

You can make such a gift now via EFT using “ATD” in the description field (until the end of September).
