Mission Update – Regional Indigenous Ministries

In October, Mission of the Month giving is devoted to our Anglican Regional Indigenous Ministries. Its two key ministries are up around Campbelltown and down around Nowra. Entrenched disadvantage makes it hard for indigenous ministries to be self-sustaining. But I believe we owe a special debt of encouragement to those ministering to the first custodians of Australia, all the more so, given the poor treatment many Aboriginal people received at the hands of later arrivals. Here’s some prayer points…

Shoalhaven Aboriginal Community Church is coordinated by Phil Miles. Pray for Phil and his wife Lyn as they take annual leave, driving up to Queensland and back; for safe travel and a restful break. Give thanks for those looking after the preaching and music while they are away. Give thanks that we have been able to set up our administration on a sounder basis, by regular monthly meetings. Pray that we will find the right people within the congregation to take over some of our administrative tasks, which have so far been done by someone outside. Give thanks for the Men’s Bible Study, which meets on Fridays. We have just started a new series on Ezra and Nehemiah. Give thanks that some new ladies have started to come recently. Pray for wisdom about how to help the ladies in the congregation as we don’t have anyone to really look after that side of things. Pray for the Aboriginal leaders in many quarters who are thinking about how to raise up young people to do Aboriginal ministry in their community for the next generation.

Macarthur Indigenous Church’s pastor is Michael Duckett. Michael is assisting with a motion about reconciliation at Synod this year.

Parish Council Update – August
  • As always, we started with a member’s Bible reading (1 Cor 12:4-13) and prayer.
  • We received and approved Lauren’s Communications report with thanks, including her logo project update – stay tuned!
  • We heard a brief report re. the Staff Planning Conference with a focus on the 4Es. For example, the calendar was tweaked to align 4Es with the seasons rather than school terms: Engage: Dec-Feb will pick up Christmas opportunities, the holiday season allows time for social connections; Evangelise: March-May will always pick up Easter.
  • We agreed to some professional development for front office staff.
  • We noted the work done on the Cathedral to replace ventilation panels under ceilings behind gutters to exclude pigeons which had recently begun nesting.
  • We resolved to transition to using EasyWorship software for our presentations.
  • For reasons of social responsibility, Parish Council approved purchasing recycled unbleached toilet paper, from ‘Who Gives a Crap’, which donates 50% of profits to agencies working to improve water access and sanitation in developing countries.
  • Noting suggestions about Cathedral comfort Parish Council agreed to engage a professional upholsterer to renew or replace padding in bench cushions on pews.
  • And we asked the Minister and Wardens to consult members about potential removal of pews from either one or both aisles in the northern transept, to allow flexibility for a welcome kiosk, pram space and limited individual seating (this is allowed as a possibility by our Conservation Management Plan, as the pews there are not original).
