Last weekend, I was privileged to attend the annual Wollongong Women’s Conference. This event has grown over many years from a small lecture theatre at UOW to the filling of the Salvation Army Centre last Saturday, when approximately 380 women attended.
What a blessing it is to be able to enjoy all the benefits of such a day, which is now under the banner of the Illawarra Chapter of the Gospel Coalition Australia, without having to travel outside Wollongong.
Women of all ages and stages of life came from the region and beyond (e.g. from the Sutherland Shire and Shoalhaven) to hear Fiona Miller teach us from the book of Joel in a series titled: “Messy World, Mighty God”.
Fiona teaches faithfully and with great clarity and personal conviction. She showed us how in the midst of our messy and broken world and/or lives, God is mightily at work to rescue, to restore and to transform. She reminded us that we need to face facts about the future, as God is also mighty in judgement. She showed us that Joel, although an ancient text, is certainly a ‘living and active’ book for our times.
The encouragements of the day were many: stirring and convicting Bible teaching, wonderful times of praise and reflection in song, personal testimonies of God’s provision during messy times, and opportunities for fellowship over food with new and old friends.
Such a day takes significant effort to bring it all together. A number of women from St Michael’s served in various ways, such as on the organising committee, in providing and presenting all the audio visual content, in planning, preparing and presenting the music, and in admission and ushering. The result was a well-organised and smoothly run day in which God was glorified and women were encouraged in their faith in Jesus. I am sure that God’s Word was at work shaping many lives.
If you have never been to the Wollongong Women’s Conference – let me encourage you to plan to attend next year. In 2020 it will be bigger than ever and at a new location – the University Hall at UOW. There will be no worries about it selling out! So women, please put the date in your diary – Saturday August 22nd – and plan to be there.
If you would like to hear Fiona’s talks from the conference, keep your eye on the website. While you are waiting for Fiona’s talks to appear, you can listen to the talks from 2018 and 2017.
This conference has been a consistent blessing to me over many years. To have a whole day set aside for the Bible to be opened, expounded and reflected on is always worthwhile. To have it available locally and be home in time for dinner is a great privilege. I thank God for it and for all those who serve in this valuable ministry to Illawarra women.
