As we heard last Sunday, the Anglican Church in our diocese has nominated the last two Sundays in November to raise awareness of the ongoing and pervasive problem of domestic abuse in our communities and in our churches. This is in conjunction with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25 – though it is an issue every day of the year. 

We grieve with all those who suffer abuse, or have suffered abuse, particularly in their homes. To our shame, this is an issue that often goes unnoticed and unaddressed, and it is not just a problem that is ‘out there’ – it is a problem in our churches, and we have a shared responsibility to be aware of it and understand it, that we might care for the vulnerable amongst us. As a follow-up to Sunday, here are some resources we commend as being worth your time to read and consider.

Gracious Father,  

We come before you with heavy hearts for those suffering in silence through domestic abuse. Lord, you are our refuge and strength, a present help in times of trouble. We ask that you bring comfort and protection to those in danger, and courage to those who feel trapped and afraid. Surround them with people who will listen, care, and act with wisdom and compassion. Heal wounds—both seen and unseen —and restore dignity and hope. May your church be a safe haven, reflecting your justice and mercy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
