What is Building for the Kingdom?

Building for the Kingdom is our strategic mission and ministry plan (with 5 key focus areas) for the next 5-10 years. At the heart of our plans is a desire to see people come to know Jesus and grow in Him. Everything we do is about helping people belong, be discipled, and use their gifts for God’s glory.

Our vision and ministry principles shape five key focus areas that reflect who we are and where we believe God is leading us. These guide how we serve, give, and grow together as a church family:

The 5 Focus Areas

1. Congregational growth & church plants

To see St Michael’s become a church of 800 members within 5 years.

2. External caring for the marginalised

To reach the marginalised in our wider community through active commitment to meeting their spiritual and physical needs.

3. Internal Pastoral Care

To be a community where every member cares for the practical and spiritual welfare of others — and knows who is caring for them.

4. Training and sending disciples to serve elsewhere

To see all departing members equipped to explain the gospel and serve their new church, and to raise up and send people into paid gospel ministry.

5. Property strategy

To have a clear and achievable major site plan that serves our current and future ministries.

Building for the Kingdom is a ministry project about people and growing God's kingdom! We're investing in gospel ministry for generations to come.

And it’s not just a leadership plan — it’s a whole-church plan.

Every person who calls St Michael’s their church has a part to play. Whether you’ve been here for decades or are new among us, we want everyone to be prayerfully involved as we seek to see gospel growth in our city and beyond.

Project Updates

2026 Ministry updates
  • In partnership with Anglicare, we’ve launched a new Mobile Community Pantry at Wollongong. A new team has been recruited and many people are donating financially to this ministry.
  • To see more disciples, this year we re-launched our Kids Holiday Club and saw many community kids come along and hear about Jesus.
  • We’ve launched a Discipleship Course (Life with Jesus) to help new Christians grow in Christ and learn what it means to follow Him.
  • An Easy English Bible study group has recently launched to help newcomers grow in their understanding of Jesus.
  • Sunflower AI is currently available at our 11:30am Easy English service so people can receive a live translation of what’s happening in the service in their own language. We are soon rolling it out at all morning congregations.
  • Equip Foundations course on Intro to the Bible growing disciples to serve at St Michael’s.
  • Helping to train the next generation by supporting three Year 13 Youthworks students.

Property Updates (as at 10/08/26)
  • Ministries that were downstairs in the Church Hall have been moved to alternative locations & resources cleared out.
  • Long overdue works to improve drainage downstairs commence this week (10/08/26) – expect site fencing, excavation and the removal of the garden bed (outside kitchen window) in the next 3 weeks.
  • Council and Heritage have approved the Development Application for the downstairs works (Stage 1).
  • An invitation to tender for the office renovation has been sent out this week. We hope to have responses within a month.
  • Plans for Stage 1 (relocation of the Offices) have been finalised. Parish Council intends to apply for a loan for these Stage 1 works. While we have funds in cash designated for property works, we intend to keep some of this money available to assist with payments require for planning and progressing the ministry-focussed renovations of the 1908 building (Stage 2).
  • Our plans have been signed off by the Sydney Diocese Regional Architectural Panel (a key approval step).
  • In coming months planning and design for stage 2 will begin.

For nearly two hundred years, disciples of Jesus have been meeting together in the Illawarra. From one military officer conducting services with a few, to a service of 60 in 1831 and the appointment of chaplains soon after, God has been at work. As his disciples in the Illawarra grew, so churches were built. St Michael’s is at the crossroad of two significant Wollongong streets, on a hill, in the heart of the city; the church in Corrimal lies in the heart of the suburb. In these buildings the word of God has been preached, His Spirit bringing people to salvation. Now it’s time to renovate those buildings to make them fit for purpose. Buildings serve mission.
