Theology, history, intrigue and masterful telling with delightful humour (everything I love most in a book!!) combine to make Susan Pursell’s ‘The History of the Nicene Creed’ a must-read. Written for primary aged kids, with 8 chapters and cartoon illustrations, this is a short and accessible introduction that will be good for anyone, of any age.

The Nicene Creed is familiar to many of us, and some will know that this year marked 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicea (held in 325AD) where the creed was formulated. But if you are at all hazy on the details, or what any of it means, this little e-book explores the theology of the Trinity, its scriptural basis, and some of the key events and historical figures. It tells the story of Athanasius, who came to faith in Christ as a young boy and spent his life serving his Lord and defending and standing for the truths of the Bible, even at great personal cost. In a time where following Jesus and contending for the scriptures continues to be costly, this book is not only an interesting historical story, but a reminder of why it matters.

Susan Pursell is a primary teacher who ministers alongside her husband at Oak Flats Anglican Church. She spent a decade or so at St Michael’s in the early 2000s, and you will find various members of her extended family at 4 of our 6 services.
