Background to ‘Art + Craft in the Hub’ ministry at Corrimal

It has now been several years since the Art and Craft in the Hub ministry at Corrimal has engaged with the local community. The group meets every Thursday (during school terms) in the Hub at Corrimal, from 9:30am-12:30pm, and enjoys working together and sharing time in creative pursuits. This ministry has enabled us to form strong and meaningful relationships, as we by share our lives with individuals who seek to practice and perhaps learn new skills in our company. Our time together has often gone beyond our regular Thursday morning gatherings. We’ve attended exhibitions, celebrated birthdays, participated in board games nights, film nights and other informal outings. Everyone is welcome to join our group!

Planning an Art Exhibition with the Illawarra Art Society

Over the years, we have also built connections with the Illawarra Art Society (and some of us are members of this long-standing art group).

Last year, we decided we’d like to unite with the Illawarra Art Society and do an exhibition to sell our work together at the St Michael’s Corrimal Hub. The Illawarra Art Society were looking for a venue to exhibit and this seemed like a great opportunity to engage within the local community, inviting people to St Michael’s Corrimal, meanwhile advertising both the IAS and our Art + Craft ministry.

 The “Art Exhibition

Our official opening will be 11am, Saturday 16 March in the Hub. It is traditional to have a formal ‘opening’ where the public is invited to spend time looking at artworks and craft, share in refreshments and meet with exhibitors. There will also be a lucky door prize (a plant!) for Opening Ceremony attendees.

Exhibition Times

Friday 15th March; 10am-4pm
Saturday 16th March; 11am-4pm
Sunday 17th March; 11am-2pm
Location:
St Michael’s Anglican Cathedral: Corrimal
121 Princes Highway, Corrimal (Opposite the Fire Station)

The church family is warmly invited to join with us in this community engage event by praying, volunteering to serve, or by inviting and attending!

What to expect at the Art Exhibition

The general public is invited; from families to interested and prospective artists. The “Exhibition” will be set up like an art fair, not like a traditional art exhibition in a gallery. The Corrimal church building on our site dictates a different approach to showing art works and craft. So, a solution was to provide spaces for 16 to 20 people to show their work. Some people will combine space due to a lesser volume of work. As one enters the venue you will be welcomed and asked to walk around and meet with the exhibitors (and/or attendants). As it is a three-day event, the exhibitors may not be there all the time.

Coffee and tea will be offered, and refreshments served (a gold coin donation is optional).

There is no cost to come in and have a look; however, when the coffee machine operates there will be a charge for barista coffee.

Goods can be purchased with cash or EFTPOS. A proportion of sales will be shared with St Michaels (to cover advertising expenses) and with the Illawarra Art Society.

How can our church family be involved?

  1. Please pray that this community event will draw people to Christ.
  1. Serve: Growth groups and individuals may like to volunteer as attendants and/or welcoming visitors. Our church family may also like to contribute refreshments and food for the Opening event. People are also needed to serve and to clean up after the Opening. We’d also love some baristas for coffee making. Please contact the office or Gloria if you’re able to serve. We will also have paper sign-up forms available at church on Sundays.
  1. Invite/attend! Please come along and take home a postcard or flyer to invite a friend or family member (available at St Michael’s on Sundays or during office hours). Is there somewhere you could put up a poster in your local area?

We’re so thankful for the unique opportunity to meet and chat with visitors during the Art Exhibition. And we look forward to partnering with you, our church family, as we shine as lights in our city!
